Crytek Announces GFACE - Closed Beta Test Open for Applications
Image

We first heard about GFACE back in April 2009 when Crytek filed a trademark for it. There has been a few hints here and there of what GFACE might be all about and, in interviews over the past few years, Crytek has been talking about their research into cloud-based gaming and services and playing games in a web browser. There are also Crytek-owned patents that are related to cloud-based technologies.

Today, Crytek has finally announced GFACE. We now know that it is a cloud-based "social media publishing service" with which you can play free multiplayer games, share videos, watch movies, chat and so on with your friends.

GFACE is powered by realtime cloud-based technology platform titled Seed Engine. It utilizes technologies such as HTML5 and CSS3 and currently works only on Firefox and Chrome web browsers.

A closed Beta test is now open for applications to a limited amount of testers. You can get a taste of how GFACE currently looks and feels by visiting the Beta section here.

In this gallery you will see CryEngine Art posted on various forums during the past months by talented 'CryEngineers'. Also included are a few artistic and otherwise intriguing Crysis 2 screenshots.

Here's How Crysis Looks on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
Image

Crysis was released for the consoles a couple of days ago. For those of you curious to see how Crysis looks, sounds and plays on consoles, we have gathered up a few videos and screenshots that gamers have shared on various forums.

From the videos, one can see the redesigned visual look as compared to the PC version. The differences are nicely illustrated in two fan-made YouTube videos, which you can watch below.

Notably, the videos also reveal that sounds of weapons, nanosuit, animals and such have also been touched up. Enemy soldiers also sound different with their voices apparently being taken from the Crysis spin off Crysis: Warhead. Nomad, the protagonist, also makes different voices on certain occasions.

Reading gamer's impressions and watching these videos and screens, it has become clear that Crytek has made a remarkable job on porting Crysis to consoles. Looking at the big picture, console gamers are getting pretty much the same Crysis experience as their PC colleagues do, albeit with the different control method, adjusted control scheme and the absence of the Ascension level, of course.

Crysis - Out Now for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
Image

Maximum speed! For console Crysis, it took under one month from official announcement to launch. That has got to be some form of a record for a first-person shooter of this caliber. The announcement didn't come completely out of the blue, since there were signs of the console port on game rating sites, three months before launch.

Almost four years after the original Crysis amazed the PC crowd, and after statements from Crytek that the game will never come to consoles, Crysis has now been released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The console port is a 'remastered' version with a new visual look mainly due to redesigned lighting style. The controls have also been revised to better suit playing on gamepad. The engine making Crysis possible on consoles is, of course, CryEngine 3 - Crytek's first multi-platform game engine.

Crysis for consoles consists of singleplayer campaign only; no multiplayer is included. Players take the role of Jake 'Nomad' Dunn, a United States Delta Force soldier. Nomad and his team mates are sent to an island in the South China Sea to rescue a group of archaeologists kidnapped by the North Korean army. Things turn sour quickly, as the archaeologists' chilling discovery awakens, proving itself to be history's greatest threat to mankind. Nomad must use his customizable arsenal and high-tech Nanosuit to fend off the North Koreans and the terrifying alien threat.

The game is distributed only through download. Crysis is now available for purchase from PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE for $19.99/£15.99/€15.99 (or 1600 Microsoft Points).
